ROSAMOND, Eastern Kern County — November 5, 2026. The Southern Kern Unified School District’s Trustee Area 1 election is separated by only 21 votes in the county’s preliminary November 4 report. Mario Gutierrez has 327 votes (51.66%) and Joel Mackay has 306 (48.34%), for 633 valid candidate choices in this one-seat area. These are unofficial election-night returns, not a certification.
Why the small margin deserves attention
More valid mailed, provisional or conditional-registration ballots can be added after election night. The county’s initial report lists all six Trustee Area 1 precincts as having submitted returns, but that should not be misread as proof every legally eligible ballot has completed review. The number of uncounted ballots specifically assigned to this trustee area is not established by the posted summary.
A separate Area 2 result
In Trustee Area 2, S. “Sunni” Hepburn has 435 votes (68.08%), against Adrienne Rendon with 204 (31.92%). This is a distinct one-seat geographic election. Its totals should not be combined with Area 1 to create a nonexistent at-large election, nor should Area 2’s larger lead be treated as a certified outcome before canvass.
School district and community services district are different
Rosamond residents also voted for the Rosamond Community Services District, where three governing-board seats are being counted in an independent election. California58 has a separate result for that board. School trustees are responsible for educational governance, facilities, policy and district finances; CSD directors oversee the public services lawfully assigned to their district. The electorates and powers are not interchangeable.
What families should do next
Parents and other eligible residents can verify the official vote on the Kern County Elections Division results page and follow any later updated tally. A 21-vote margin is a reason to report the timestamp carefully, not to speculate about how remaining voters cast ballots.
